Recurrent and partly unexplained ailments affecting employees at the Media Library in Poissy near Paris led the city to close the facility for several months and consult the CSTB to resolve the problem. The CSTB put together a team of multidisciplinary experts (air, thermal, indoor air quality, psychology, sociology) for a complete diagnosis of the situation. After learning about the first actions to improve indoor air quality, the CSTB analyzed the technical information available and inspected the premises and equipment. It also worked with the stakeholders to explore the influence of the organization and human factors on the occurrence of the problems. The implementation of an action plan co-created with municipal teams made it possible to resolve these problems. This involved optimization of the conditions of indoor comfort for employees, targeted information and communication, and regular monitoring of employees by the city health department to prevent the occurrence of similar situations. The refurbished premises of the library reopened on September 30, 2017.

Karl Olive
mayor of the City of Poissy

“On March 17, 2017, when we found a ventilation malfunction causing health problems for our employees, we immediately decided, in collaboration with the library teams, to close the premises. It was then necessary to identify the problems and find a way to resolve them. The assistance of the Scientific and Technical Center for Building (CSTB) was very valuable and allowed us to get back to normal operations. The city invested €162,000 to restore a healthy environment. We have always been committed to spending what is necessary when it comes to the health and safety of our employees and the residents of Poissy.”
