As part of its Paris-Est Science and Technical Center on the “Sustainable City,” the MEDDE (French Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy) has funded the “Digital City” research project led by the CSTB. Organized by the Centre Scientific et Technique du Bâtiment (CSTB), the project is driven by 12 internationally recognized research teams with unique skills, belonging to five institutions of the scientific and technical network of the MEDDE : the CSTB, École des Ponts ParisTech,IGN (French National Geographic Institute), IFSTTAR (French Institute of Science and Technology for Transport, Development and Networks), and Météo France.

The “Digital City” project aims to bring together this broad range of complementary expertise (image processing, geometry processing, data exchange formats, 3D GIS, mesh generation, scientific computing, software architecture and scientific visualization). This includes interoperability of mathematical models and software tools to stimulate the emergence of effective interfaces between partners on the scientific and software levels.

The project also seeks to overcome barriers (especially technical) to implementing software platforms integrating the various management, monitoring and modeling tools used by regional stakeholders, particularly those in cities.

The project comes to a close at the end of the year and the CSTB, with the support of the MEDDE, is organizing an end-of-project seminar that aims to exchange with operational stakeholders on various issues raised during the work. This seminar is paired with the “ICT for Sustainable Places” conference in Nice, which is organized by the RESILIENT project and funded by the Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7), in which the CSTB also participates.

Finally, the Ministry is preparing a “Digital City” conference in the first half of 2014 in Paris; the Nice seminar offers an opportunity to start discussions in particular areas in preparation.
