CSTB teams and skills are structured to fulfill the institution's public interest missions and to meet customer and partner needs. As of December 31st 2019, the total headcount was 954.
Presidency and Executive Committee
The Presidency and Executive Committee are in charge of the general management of the public institution. It is composed of the Chief Executive Officer, Étienne Crépon, and Deputy CEOs:
- Sylvie Ravalet, Delegate General Director, Deputy CEO.
- Hervé Charrue, Deputy CEO in charge of Research and Development.
The Quality and Ethics Department reports directly to the President of the CSTB.
Research and Development Department
Research at the CSTB aims to develop multidisciplinary and systemic approaches to construction and to advance the scientific and technical knowledge base to support public authorities and socioeconomic players. The Research Department includes 170 researchers (full-time equivalent) and an average of 60 PhD and post-doctoral students. This department develops its own research projects, as well as collaborative projects, and runs the CSTB Carnot Institute, in charge of research partnerships.
Technical Department
The Technical Department handles activities such technical assessments to determine whether a product is fit for use in buildings and structures. It also works to boost the development of eco-construction and the use of a multi-criteria approach to building performance. For innovative products and processes, the CSTB offers technical diagnoses and assessments, along with intellectual services.
Operational Departments
Publishing and Training
The Publishing and Training Department contributes to disseminating operational knowledge to a wide professional audience. Its activities include the publication of books and manuals, the distribution of business software packages, technical-regulatory information services and offers of professional training courses.
Economics and Resources
The Economics and Resources Department concentrates on analysing and accompanying constructive solutions linked with circularity, economic model analysis, park dynamics and forecasting, as well as developing methods and tools to support stakeholders in taking account of these new practices.
Energy & Environment
The Energy & Environment Department develops methods and tools to design, upgrade or manage buildings and to assess their energy and environmental performance.
Health & Comfort
The Health & Comfort Department focuses on human health and comfort in buildings. In addition to the expert skills of its teams, the department has digital and experimental resources to conduct research and tests in many fields related to sanitary security in the built environment and ambient conditions.
Information Technology
The IT Department provides expertise and R&D on applications and usages of information technologies in the construction industry (information management, multi-scale BIM, internet-connected objects, etc.).
Climatology, Aerodynamics, Aeraulics for buildings and transport
The Climatology, Aerodynamics, Aeraulics for buildings and transport Department, based in Nantes, studies the effects of wind and climate on products and structures, as well as air quality within the building system.
Safety, Structures and Fire Performance
The Safety, Structures and Fire Performance Department takes a comprehensive approach to the safety of building stock as regards risks to the solidity of structures and their reaction to fire.
Envelope, Insulation and Flooring
The Envelope, Insulation and Flooring Department studies innovative processes and products for building envelopes. It works to improve the energy performance of structures and buildings; to assess the durability of technological solutions and their impact on the environment and to evaluate the risk of pathologies affecting the structure, as well as the occupants.
Windows and Glazing
The Windows and Glazing Department studies and assesses glazed products (interior and exterior doors, windows, etc.) and their installation in buildings.
Water
The Water Department focuses on fluid networks within buildings and external networks: water supply, urban heating and sanitation.
