Summer school in Modeling and Assessment for Urban Planning

Summer school in Modeling and Assessment for Urban Planning

From September 1 to 5, 2014, at École des Ponts ParisTech, the Scientific Interest Group on Urban Modeling (GIS MU) is organizing a summer school on modeling and assessment for urban planning, in collaboration with the chair in “eco-design of building complexes and infrastructure.” The CSTB, a partner of GIS MU, is participating in this training by presenting the digital model as the integrating framework for urban modeling and assessment.

Students finishing their master’s degree, PhD students, engineers, developers, architects and urban planners are invited to participate in the summer school on Modeling and Assessment for Urban Planning, from September 1 to 5. Register here.

Anticipate and organize urban development: housing, economic activities and access to resources of all kinds in the urban area – these are the objectives of urban planning which must now meet the challenges of sustainable development. This involves measuring the direct and indirect performance of urban systems and their various impacts. Urban assessment and modeling are tools to guide planning.

The summer school next September focuses on engineering in decision support for urban planning. It will provide concepts and methods for investigating system components and operation. The purpose is to design development scenarios for assessment by simulation, then gradually optimize them. The course addresses measurement and observational approaches; simulation models for the system and its various economic, social or environmental impacts and specific and multi-criteria assessment methods.

Julien Soula, a specialist in information and communications technology at the CSTB, will discuss the prospects for urban planning through digital modeling. “To meet the current challenges of sustainable development, public stakeholders (cities, planners, social housing operators, consulting firms, etc.) are looking for local digital analysis tools that are efficient, cost effective and multi-criteria to help them in the design, assessment and decision-making phases. To meet this need, the CSTB and its partners are offering an innovative approach that involves implementation of a digital model.”

The contribution of the CSTB will be illustrated by the results of the Digital City* project and by demonstrations of the latest version of prototype software. The CSTB will also discuss the future “Digital City Charter” and the Decision3D offering, which aims to make digital modeling tools accessible to all stakeholders in the region.

* The Digital City project is conducted through a partnership between the French Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy, the French General Commission for Sustainable Development, the CSTB, École des Ponts ParisTech, the French Institute of Science and Technology for Transport, Development and Networks (IFSTTAR), the French National Institute of Geographic and Forest Information (IGN), and Météo France.
