Opportunities for reuse of vitrified bottom ash

The bottom ash of household waste—solid residue after incineration—is vitrified to render it inert. So, what do you do with the final waste? Savoie Déchets, a waste treatment association, wants to find a market for this material in a circular economy. In 2017, it asked the CSTB for a multidisciplinary study. For six months, the CSTB used its test facility in Grenoble to assess the mechanical, thermal and optical characteristics of vitrified bottom ash and compared them with other materials. Based on its study of the multiphysical performance of this waste, the CSTB identified possible reuses from a technical and economic standpoint. Exterior paving stones and slabs, street furniture, gravestones and firebacks, for example, could be made from household waste bottom ash.
