The CSTB project is mainly financed by a FASEP fund (fund for study and help to the private sector administered by the DGTPE from the French Economic Ministry).

It aims at creating synergies between innovative French firms, which have until now offered separate systems and products, in order to build sustainable buildings and cities. The CSTB (French Scientific and Technical Construction Center) brought its scientific and technical expertise to develop concepts and guidelines to build eco-cities and sustainable buildings, as a support of an integrated offer of systems and products.

The project has been done in cooperation with the SRIBS, CSTB’s counterpart in Shanghai. CSTB has contributed to the conception and the construction of the Ecohome Pavilion. An urban design workshop took place in March 2009, with the participation of 80 international urban planners and engineers in partnership with Tongji University, l’Ecole des Mines de Paris and Cornell University, along with a dozen French firms. It led to innovative propositions for the development of one of the ecocities of the Chinese national program: Hulu Dao in the Liaoning.

For this 2010 World Expo in Shanghai, about 200 nations and international organizations have vied with each other to create buildings of a new type. Nevertheless, among all these constructions, the Ecohome stands out. It can be found in the Urban Best Practices Area, to represent Shanghai’s municipality. Built by the SRIBS (Shanghai Research Institute on Building Science), it is a prototype of the perfect sustainable building, aiming at being reproduced in the whole China after the expo. Being the only Chinese building of this type, its influence goes past the city of Shanghai. According to the target of the Urban Best Practises Area, the Ecohome is dedicated to displaying the lifestyle of tomorrow, by illuminating successful sustainable practices and methods, in a distinctive way, yet easy to understand and appreciate. Outside, the design of the building has tried to use and show new passive and active technologies to save energy, such as windmills or large windows, but keeping details of the Chinese and Shanghaiese building traditions. A door from Xintiandi will be placed on one side and the windows have been inspired from traditional ones.
The Ecohome has been built to stay, and to be a standard for future housing development in China and maybe beyond. The building aims at presenting technologies of the future with the main target of reducing energy, and resource consumption, but also to enhance modern life. The SRIBS has called for the most innovative Chinese and foreign firms to make this house a reference. The CSTB (Scientific and Technical Construction Center), which has worked with SRIBS for many years now, shared its scientific and technical expertise with SRIBS to assess the building. The common work focused on how to evaluate the energy performance, the quality of the inside ventilation, and the acoustic environment. It also dealt with the adaptation of the lighting to the needs, and with the use of virtual reality in the assessment and control of the building. To tackle all those issues, CSTB set several workshops with SRIBS and French firms, to present these ground breaking building assistance methods. French firms were thus able to propose their more innovative products in terms of energy savings and quality of interior space. Five were chosen by the SRIBS to set their products in the Ecohome and provide maintenance during the expo.
The French firms are the more numerous foreign firms to be involved in the project. As for the others, Philips has been the hugest sponsor with one million Euros invested. He provided the building with LED lighting, 3D TV without the need of wearing glasses, and also a bed measuring the blood pressure.

Though, the Ecohome has not been conceived as a commercial site but more as a place of experiments and discoveries for the visitors. A lot of little entertainments and surprises will be found on the whole path of the visit, and conferences will be organized during the six months.

Finally, the Ecohome will be a place of learning and discovery until October and an example for future construction in the long term.
