The weather conditions on the Mediterranean coast, characterized by winds from the sea and land, must be considered during construction. The CSTB assisted in designing the 100-meter high towers for housing units, offices and services on a coveted shoreline where land is scarce.
Air quality and comfort in schools in France: first results of the national campaign
At a public workshop held in Paris on June 25th, the Indoor Air Quality Observatory (OQAI) presented the first results of a national campaign conducted between 2013 and 2017 in 301 nursery and elementary schools in mainland France.
The CSTB's expertise supporting the Montpellier Sud-de-France train station
Comprising a roof made of ultra-high performance fiber-reinforced concrete (UHPFRC), with an openwork pattern of 10,000 glazed openings, the new train station in Montpellier is a technical and architectural innovation designed by Marc Mimram.
Greywater recycling: from concept to assessment
In October 2015, WisElement, a VSE, took advantage of the CSTB’s innovation advisory and support service, Ariane. Since then, it has been advancing step-by-step to increase the reliability of its innovative device for the instant recovery of heat from shower greywater. In 2016, the CSTB initiated a study of the technical and regulatory aspects of the innovation in the concept phase. The results may support a request for Technical Approval in 2017.
Stepped timber frame with invisible seams
Wooden beams make up the stepped structure of the huge roof covering the Aqualagon, the future water park of Marne-la-Vallée. The beams were made by Arbonis, using an innovative assembly technique, which received a favorable ATEx assessment in early 2016.
Insulated concrete form walls: four technological leaps supported by the CSTB
2016: The industrial companies GBE and Lafarge received a Technical Approval for a cast-in-situ wall with integrated insulation and concrete skin. This system has just taken its fourth technological leap, 20 years after the emergence of the first solution of its kind on the market. The CSTB has supported the advancement of this innovation since its beginnings. Working alongside the stakeholders through the assessment procedure, the CSTB helps ensure the safety and stability of their system.
Laboratory measurements and on-site measurements: getting closer
Thermal and acoustic insulation made of recycled paper, or cellulose wadding, is used in loose fill or in panels in buildings. A study initiated by a working group of industrial manufacturers with the CSTB explored to what extent the thickness of this loose fill insulation is subject to settling, over time. This is a major challenge in the context of energy transition. The goal is to assess this component's actual contribution to the energy performance of the building envelope.
Innovative green roof for Lascaux IV
The Centre International de l’Art Pariétal Lascaux IV (International Centre for Cave Art), which exhibits a reproduction of a prehistoric cave with paintings, was inaugurated in December 2016. Its green roof blends into the wooded landscape of the Dordogne region. The roof’s steep slope required an inventive design: 700 bollards hold the insulation material and vegetation in place over a roof of 7000 m2. Designed and installed by the company SNEI, which specializes in weatherproofing, this system received a Technical Experimentation Assessment (ATEx) from the CSTB.
How does the ETFE cushion canopy over Rosa Parks commuter rail station stand up to heavy rain?
The roofing of the new Rosa Parks commuter rail station on the RER E line in Paris uses ETFE-foil cushions, a light, translucent material. As part of an ATEx conducted by the CSTB, the Spanish company IASO, which specializes in fabric architecture, strengthened the soundness of this innovative system. It installed a metal cable net on the underside, which reduces the appearance of pockets of waters and ensures the stability of the supporting structure.
The offering of the CSTB: ATEx and regulatory flexibility
On June 21, the CSTB organized a day-long event to guide stakeholders in innovation. A round table discussion focused on innovation in connection with the regulatory flexibility recently proposed for the construction industry. In order to support stakeholders, the CSTB is expanding the scope of the Technical Experimentation Assessment (ATEx) to new solutions that have been developed, based on the regulatory flexibility that has made it possible to use means other than those described in the regulations.
